Choosing a web host is something that can affect you far more than you would perhaps assume.  Its not just a matter of choosing the right balance of services and price either.  Many of the major search engines have applied bans against hosting services that, in their view, were encouraging spammers to over submit for example.

Choose the wrong hosting service for your website and you may find that no amount of marketing will get you listed on the search engines, or that experienced surfers avoid your site due to bad expectations of the web hosts.

Hypermart.com, for example, offer good, free e-commerce web site hosting in a very neat package. However, the sites built on this host will have great difficulty, because the service got banned by Altavista. Altavista are one of the most important and popular of all search engines, so this could prevent a very significant number of customers finding your site when searching.

You must also consider that owning your own domain name is generally an essential element to success. This is not simply for creating branding either. Many advertising companies will only deal with sites that have their own domain. If you wish to consider hosting banner ads on your pages for additional revenue, then a domain registration is essential.

However, with all of the above said, there are still a great many ways to set up an e-commerce site in a single day using purely free services and hosting.
