Web Hosting and Site Hosts
Terrashare
Free Web Hosting
By Ammon Johns
Terrashare offer free web space and also pay you for
page views that your site generates. They will
also allow you to recommend the service to others as part
of a generous affiliate program.
What you get from terrashare is 25Mb of web space and a listing
in their directory. You also get a position in the affiliate
program and the option to apply to be a Guru, Host or Moderator
of their web community.
What you don't get is CGI access, SSL, shopping carts, etc.
so this is really only suitable for building with HTML, although
Java and JavaScript would enable you to add some dynamic features
to your site without needing CGI.
Unusually, Terrashare don't support members using a .htaccess
file to specify their own page for errors such as the 404
error (file not found) that can all too easily occur when
sites are updated or when links have not been fully checked
and tested.
Terrashare are currently unsuited to any serious web hosting
usage because not only do they add a top-of-page banner (as
most free hosts do) but also a bottom of page banner, and
in what can only be described by me as foolish greed, they
additionally add random pop-up windows to your site.
If your site may already open additional windows, then this
thoughtless and unadvertised opening of extra windows could
actually cause your visitor's computer to crash. Terrashare
have no way of knowing how many windows the visitor may already
have open, nor of how many their system can sustain.
Because of this, the general hatred by internet users for
popup and console window advertising, and also the fact that
Terrashare take advantage of the 404 errors to open additional
popup windows and no link back to your site, I find them totally
unsuited to even amatuer use at this time.
