Web
Directories in SEO Campaigns
by Ammon Johns
The web directories are a very different kind of customer
for content than are the search engines. A search engine is
indexed by robotic 'spiders' while a web directory is indexed
by a human editor for a start.
Not only that, but web directories are generally designed
to be browsed rather than searched. Rather than letting the
search engine spider assess the meaning of your pages, with
a directory your entire site is assigned an overall categorisation.
Oh yes, and that's the biggest difference of all. While a
search engine indexes each page of your site, a web
directory prefers to assess the site as a whole single entity.
While in search engines you may be listed for as many terms
as occur in your pages, in a web directory your entire site
is listed by category with a simple short description.
In this section I will tell you more about the character,
style and potential of the various web directories that are
important to an overall SEO campaign.
