Length Limits of the
Major Search Engines
by Ammon Johns
How long can your title be? Will your description be too
long for proper display in the search engines? These are the
kinds of questions that you need to know if you are to maximise
the benefit of being listed.
Your listing in a search engine is a little like an advert
in a business directory. What you say, and how you present
yourself will influence whether or not those searching for
a company like yours will come to you, or go to a rival for
their needs.
Having spelling errors, a description that cuts off halfway
through a word, or other glaring errors, could make your company
seem a poorer choice than a better thought out competitor's
listing.
So you need to know how many characters of text from your
page titles, and meta tag descriptions can be displayed in
the various major search engines. You then must play to the
lowest capabilities or accept a poor appearance in some engines.
