Information
About the
Major Search Engines
by Ammon Johns
If the search engines are to be effectively 'used' to bring
customers to your site, then you really need to understand
those engines.
In this section, you will discover information about search
engines and how they can work to help you in bringing customers
to your site.
While the primary focus of information will be on the major,
international search engines, you will also learn how to gather
your own information on local and topical search engines.
However, the very first thing we must do, is to just define
what a search engine is, and how it differs from a web directory.
A search engine is machine driven and indexed, while a web
directory is built and edited by human editors.
A search engine indexes individual web pages, while a web
directory focuses on listing web sites as a whole and not
the individual pages within those sites.
A search engine generally draws search results by matching
the search words against the actual full page data in its
database. A web directory matches search words purely against
the title, description and url (and often the category too).
